Autumn is the season most people say they dress best in, and the one they find hardest to get right on a Tuesday morning. One day can start at 7°C and finish at 17°C, it rains when the forecast said it wouldn't, and the coat that felt right in October feels thin by November. The fix isn't more clothes. It's a small set of outfit formulas that suit each stage of the season.

This guide gives you 20 of them, grouped by temperature and situation: early, mid and late autumn, rainy days, and the office. Each one names the exact pieces, says why the combination works and suggests a swap if you don't own the hero piece. The photographs are real looks from Stylin's autumn weekly drops.

The short answer. A good autumn outfit is a summer-weight base plus one or two removable layers, finished in deeper colours and heavier textures. The most dependable formulas are a long coat over a tonal base, a knit over a collared shirt, dark denim with a textured jacket, a skirt or dress with boots, and an overshirt or gilet as a mid-layer. Choose the outer layer for the morning temperature and make sure everything underneath still works once it comes off.

What makes an outfit look like autumn

Three things change between a summer outfit and an autumn one, and you rarely need all three at once.

If you only change one thing, change the outer layer. A good coat or jacket covers most of the outfit for most of the day, and it's what people see first.

Early autumn outfits (15–20°C / 59–68°F)

September and early October are summer clothes with a light layer on top. The aim is to look seasonal without overheating by mid-afternoon, so keep the base light and let the layer carry the autumn feel.

1. Trench coat, striped top, straight jeans and loafers

The classic transitional outfit, and still the most useful. A trench is light enough to wear open at 18°C, it's shower-resistant, and it smartens anything you put under it. A Breton or rugby stripe keeps it from looking too serious. Swap: no trench? A cotton chore jacket or a lightweight mac does the same job.

2. Knit vest over a shirt with wide-leg trousers

A sleeveless knit gives you warmth across the body without heat under the arms, which makes it ideal for days that can't decide what they are. Wear it over a crisp white or striped shirt with the collar and cuffs showing. It looks put together without being formal, and the shirt works on its own if the afternoon warms up.

3. Satin slip skirt with a sweatshirt or fine knit

Your summer slip skirt keeps working if you change what's around it. Put a soft sweatshirt or a fine merino knit on top and wear chunky boots below. The mix of shine and texture is what makes it look intentional. Add tights or knee socks once it drops below about 14°C.

4. Summer midi dress with a fine long-sleeve top underneath

Wearing a thin long-sleeve tee or roll-neck under a strappy or short-sleeved dress gives you an extra month out of it. Add loafers or ankle boots and a denim or suede jacket. Pick a base colour from the dress's print so the layering looks deliberate.

5. Overshirt over a tee with chinos and trainers

An overshirt, sometimes called a shacket, is a heavier shirt you wear open like a light jacket. In wool or brushed cotton it's warm enough for a cool morning and still comfortable indoors. It's the easiest weekend outfit of the season. Olive, tan or a muted check over a white tee goes with almost anything.

Mid-autumn outfits (8–14°C / 46–57°F)

This is proper autumn: cold mornings, mild afternoons, and the point where you need a coat rather than a jacket. It's also where the season's best outfits happen, because you can wear wool and knitwear without bundling up.

6. Camel coat, cream knit, dark denim and trainers

If you only copy one outfit from this list, copy this one. A camel coat makes everything under it look more expensive, cream and camel are a soft tonal pair, and dark denim keeps it grounded. Trainers stop it looking too formal for a weekday; switch to loafers or ankle boots for dinner. Add a looped scarf in a similar tone for extra warmth.

7. Longline quilted gilet over a shirt and jumper

A gilet adds warmth to your core and leaves your arms free, so you can wear it over a jumper on a cool day without needing a coat. A longline gilet looks smarter than a short one. Let a striped shirt hem show under the knit, wear straight jeans, and add lug-sole boots so the outfit can handle wet pavements.

8. Long trench over an all-black base

A black roll-neck or high-neck top with black tailored trousers works as one column of colour, and a long olive or khaki trench sits over it like a frame. It's sharp, it suits nearly everyone, and it works from the office to an evening out. One small, unexpected detail, like a brooch or burgundy socks above ankle boots, keeps it from looking severe.

9. Suede jacket, roll-neck and midi skirt with knee boots

Swap the coat for a suede or leather jacket on drier days. A thin roll-neck, a midi skirt in wool or cord, and knee-high boots cover your legs from hem to toe, so you won't need tights until it gets properly cold. Tan suede with chocolate or burgundy is one of the most dependable colour pairings of the season.

10. Chunky cardigan worn as a jacket

A heavy, belted or shawl-collar cardigan can replace a jacket on mild afternoons. Wear it over a tee with straight jeans and loafers, and button it up rather than leaving it open so it reads as outerwear. It's ideal for school runs, weekend coffee and working from home on days you go out once.

Late autumn outfits (0–7°C / 32–45°F)

By November the coat is the outfit. Choose a warm one, wear more insulating layers underneath, and use accessories, especially a scarf, as the warmth you can add or remove.

A half-zip jumper sits between sporty and smart, and under a long navy coat it looks tidy enough for the commute. Wear it with straight grey or charcoal trousers and clean trainers. Unzip the neck once you're indoors. Navy, cream and grey are all cool neutrals, so the outfit looks coordinated without any effort.

12. Black layers with an oversized camel scarf

A long black coat over a black top and black joggers or wide trousers is easy and warm, but it can look flat. A big camel or tan scarf breaks it up, warms the colour near your face, and pulls the outfit together. White trainers keep it relaxed. The scarf does most of the work, so make it a generous size.

13. Puffer jacket over tailoring

On the coldest days, put a puffer over smarter pieces: a fine roll-neck, wool trousers and leather boots. The contrast between sporty and tailored looks modern, and a puffer is warmer for its weight than almost any wool coat. A long puffer in black, navy or chocolate is easier to dress up than a short shiny one.

14. Knit dress, opaque tights and knee boots

It's one piece but it's warm from neck to knee, which makes it the lowest-effort cold-weather outfit there is. Pick a rib or merino knit midi dress, add 60–80 denier tights and knee-high boots, and finish with a wool coat. Belt the dress if you want more shape at the waist.

Rainy-day autumn outfits

When rain is likely, choose your outer layer and shoes first and let everything else follow. A damp knit stays damp all day, and so do suede shoes. These three outfits stay smart in wet weather.

15. Long raincoat over a slim base

A knee-length or longer waterproof coat protects most of the outfit, so you only need to keep what's underneath slim and quick-drying: thick leggings or slim trousers, a light knit and trainers with a rubber sole. Add a cap instead of an umbrella if it's windy.

16. Trench, dark denim and rubber-soled Chelsea boots

Dark denim hides splashes better than light trousers, and a leather Chelsea boot with a rubber sole looks smart and copes with puddles. Add a trench and a wool roll-neck for a rainy-day outfit you can wear to the office.

17. Hooded water-resistant jacket, chunky knit and cords

For a wet weekend, wear a waxed or water-resistant hooded jacket over a chunky jumper and corduroy trousers, with lug-sole boots. Cord is warm, textured and full of autumn colour. Keep the bag to waxed canvas or leather so it can handle a shower.

Autumn outfits for work

Office outfits need to cover two climates, a cold commute and a warm building, so build them around a smart base that looks finished once the coat comes off. For interviews in particular, see interviewing in autumn and winter.

18. Blazer over a fine roll-neck with wool trousers

Replacing the shirt with a thin roll-neck makes a blazer warmer and quietly more modern, and there's nothing to iron. Wear it with wool trousers and loafers, all in two or three neutral colours. It suits most offices, from business casual to fairly formal.

19. Tonal brown: chocolate, camel and cream

Dressing in shades of one colour family is one of the easiest ways to look polished, and brown is the most autumnal way to do it. Try chocolate trousers, a camel knit or blazer and a cream shirt or top, with brown leather shoes. Varying the depth from light to dark keeps it from looking flat.

20. Check or houndstooth trousers with a plain fine knit

A traditional check is the easiest way to wear pattern at work. Let the trousers be the statement, wear a plain black, navy or burgundy knit on top, and finish with loafers. One patterned piece per outfit is enough.

You don't need to buy anything to wear the outfits above. If you are shopping, these are the trends that work with what most people already own. Each one is a single piece you can add to the formulas.

Stylin's own looks point the same way. In the three most recent weekly drops, from mid-September to early October 2026, eight of the ten looks were built around a long outer layer: a trench, a long wool coat, a longline gilet or a raincoat. Half of them finished in trainers rather than boots.

Autumn 2026 pieces worth having
  • Burgundy and chocolate brown. The season's two key colours, and they look good together. Wear one as the big piece, like a coat or trousers, and the other as a knit or bag.
  • A long coat or trench. Longer lengths are back. Over-the-knee coats look strong worn open over slim or wide trousers.
  • The bomber jacket. Back as a smart-casual piece rather than sportswear. Cropped bombers with fluid trousers or a satin skirt are the new jeans-and-a-nice-top.
  • Satin and silk worn casually. Bias-cut skirts and silky shirts paired with knitwear, sweatshirts and boots, not saved for evenings.
  • Checks, houndstooth and rugby stripes. Bold pattern on one piece, with everything else kept plain.
  • Quilting. Quilted gilets, liners and jackets, especially in longer lengths.
  • Lug-sole shoes. Chunky soles on boots and loafers make even a polished outfit practical in the wet.

Make these outfits work for your colouring and shape

Every formula above works in principle. Whether it suits you comes down to two things: your colouring and your proportions.

Colouring. Autumn colours look very different from one person to the next. Warm, golden colouring suits rust, mustard, olive and camel. Cool colouring looks better in plum, charcoal, navy and berry-toned burgundy. If an earthy shade makes you look tired, wear it below the waist and keep a flattering colour near your face. Our guide to colour analysis explains how to find your palette.

Shape. Coat length and where layers end change your proportions more than anything else. A long coat worn open draws a long vertical line that flatters almost everyone. A belted coat or wrap knit defines the waist on hourglass and pear figures. Wide trousers balance broader shoulders. The body shape types guide covers all five shapes.

Refresh your wardrobe for autumn without buying much

Most of these 20 outfits use pieces you already own. Before you shop, bring your knits and coats out of storage, check them for moth damage and pilling, and see which summer pieces can carry on with a layer on top: slip skirts, midi dresses, tees and lightweight shirts all can. If you do buy, buy one hardworking piece, usually a coat, boots or a good knit, rather than several trend pieces. Our autumn/winter capsule has the full piece list and a step-by-step guide to switching your wardrobe over.

For the getting-dressed part, the layering order for autumn's transitional weather explains how to dress for a day that runs from 8°C to 18°C. For special occasions, see autumn date outfits and autumn and winter weddings.

How Stylin builds autumn outfits from your wardrobe

Formulas are useful, but the hard part is applying them to the clothes in your wardrobe every morning. Stylin does that for you. Add your clothes and the app builds complete outfits from them, styled for the occasion and the day's weather, so the suggestions already allow for a cold morning or rain on the commute. It also considers your colouring and body shape, steering you towards the autumn shades and cuts that suit you.

Each week Stylin also publishes a weekly drop of new looks, including all the photographs in this guide. If a look is nearly right, you can restyle it with a plain-English instruction such as "swap the trainers for boots". Frequently asked questions

FAQs

What should I wear in autumn?
Wear a light base layer, such as a tee, shirt or fine knit, with one or two layers you can remove, and finish with an outer layer chosen for the morning temperature. In early autumn that might be a trench over a striped top and jeans. In mid-autumn it's a wool coat over a knit, and in late autumn a warm coat, a roll-neck and boots. Deeper colours like camel, olive, burgundy and navy, and heavier textures like wool, suede and corduroy, make any of these look seasonal.

What are the essential pieces for an autumn wardrobe?
The pieces that do the most work are a trench coat or light mac, a warm wool coat, two or three fine knits, a chunky jumper or cardigan, dark straight jeans, a pair of wool or cord trousers, ankle boots and a pair of weatherproof boots or trainers. A large scarf is the most useful accessory because it adds a lot of warmth and folds into a bag when the afternoon warms up.

What colours are in for autumn 2026?
Burgundy and chocolate brown are the key colours of autumn 2026, and they work especially well together. Classic autumn neutrals stay strong as well: camel, olive, navy, charcoal and cream. If you want to add colour, rust, deep teal and plum all pair well with those neutrals.

How do you dress for autumn weather that's cold in the morning and warm in the afternoon?
Layer thin pieces rather than one thick one, and make sure each layer looks finished on its own. A typical combination is a tee or shirt, a fine knit or overshirt, and a light coat. As it warms up, the coat comes off first, then the knit goes over your shoulders or into your bag, and the base layer is the outfit you wear for the rest of the afternoon. A scarf is the easiest way to adjust your warmth during the day.

Can you wear trainers with a long coat?
Yes. Clean, low-profile trainers with a long wool coat or trench is one of the defining combinations of autumn 2026, and half of the looks in Stylin's recent autumn weekly drops finished in trainers. It works best when the trainers are simple, in white, grey or a neutral leather, and the rest of the outfit is fairly tailored, so the contrast looks intentional.

What shoes should you wear in autumn?
Ankle boots are the most versatile autumn shoe because they work with jeans, trousers, skirts and dresses. Add loafers for smarter outfits, clean trainers for weekends and commuting, and a pair with a rubber or lug sole for wet days. Knee-high boots become useful once you're wearing skirts and dresses in colder weather.

Can you wear a skirt in autumn without tights?
Yes, while it's still mild. In early autumn a midi or maxi skirt with knee-high boots covers most of your leg, and knee socks with ankle boots work with shorter hems. Once temperatures fall below about 12–14°C, add opaque tights of around 60–80 denier for warmth.

How do you make an all-black outfit look autumnal?
Add one warm colour and one heavier texture. A camel scarf, an olive or khaki trench, or a chocolate leather bag warms up black straight away, and wool, suede or a chunky knit adds the depth that autumn outfits need. Small details like burgundy socks or a brooch also stop all-black looking flat.

The best autumn outfits are summer pieces with better layers on top, finished in deeper colours and richer textures. Stylin builds them from the clothes you already own, for the weather you're actually dressing for.
