A capsule wardrobe is a small, carefully chosen collection of clothes that work together — where almost everything mixes with almost everything else, and getting dressed in the morning requires less thought than it used to. It's not about owning as few clothes as possible. It's about owning the right clothes for your actual life.
The term was coined by London boutique owner Susie Faux in the 1970s and popularised by Donna Karan's Seven Easy Pieces collection in 1985. The core principle hasn't changed: a small wardrobe of well-chosen pieces you genuinely wear is more useful than a large one full of options you rarely reach for.
How many pieces?
The internet will tell you anywhere from 10 to 50. The honest answer is: however many pieces cover your actual life without surplus. A reasonable starting target for most people is 30–40 pieces that span everyday needs — work, weekends, evenings, exercise — with a small number of occasion pieces on top.
The core pieces most people need
- Tops: 2–3 plain tees in white, grey, navy/black. A fitted long-sleeve. One or two quality knits. A shirt or blouse for work and evenings.
- Bottoms: One well-fitting pair of dark jeans. A pair of tailored trousers or chinos in a neutral. A skirt or second trouser option.
- Outerwear: A versatile coat that works across most of your life. A lighter layer — blazer, denim jacket, or cardigan.
- Footwear: Clean neutral trainers. A smarter flat shoe or boot. A dress shoe or heel for occasions.
- One or two statement pieces: Something you genuinely love — a boldly coloured coat, a distinctive dress. This prevents a capsule from feeling bland.
How to build one from what you already own
You almost certainly don't need to buy much. Most people have more of a capsule than they realise, buried under items they never wear.
Step 1: Empty your wardrobe. Everything out. This forces you to actually see what you own rather than what you remember owning.
Step 2: Separate into two piles. "Definitely wear" and "everything else." If you're keeping something because it was expensive, because you might wear it someday, or because you feel guilty for not wearing it — second pile.
Step 3: Audit the "definitely wear" pile. Do these items work together? Are there obvious orphans — pieces with no natural partners? What occasions in your life are underserved?

Before any new purchase, ask: does this work with what I already own? Will I genuinely wear it? Does it earn its place?
The colour palette question
A capsule works best when most items share a colour palette. Neutrals (navy, white, grey, camel, black, cream) form the backbone, with one or two accent colours you genuinely reach for.
