Fabric & Care Decoder
Describe the symbols on the tag, or just the fibre content if the tag is gone. This skill translates it into the wash temperature, detergent, drying method, ironing heat, and the shrinkage and pilling risk to actually expect — plus which part of the label is being overly cautious.
Care labels use two vocabularies most people never learned to read: a set of ISO symbols with no words attached, and a fibre-content percentage that quietly determines everything the symbols only hint at. The result is that most laundry mistakes are not carelessness, they are a language problem — a wool jumper machine-washed on the wrong cycle, a viscose blouse hung wet until it grows two sizes, a perfectly washable knit sent to the dry cleaner because the label was hedging against a lawsuit rather than describing the fibre.
This skill reads the label — as symbols, as printed words, or as nothing but a fibre percentage when the tag is missing — and turns it into the actual instructions: the wash temperature and cycle, the right detergent, how to dry it, how hot the iron can go, and the shrinkage and pilling you should actually expect at those settings. It also does the part most labels leave out: it tells you which restriction is protecting the garment and which one is just a disclaimer.
The domain knowledge is not vibes. Wash-tub dots map to fixed temperatures, iron dots to fixed sole-plate ceilings, and every fibre has a documented shrinkage range at the settings its label actually permits. The skill applies those figures directly rather than rounding to "handle with care."
This skill never looks at the garment itself. It tells you how to keep it intact; it cannot tell you whether it suits you.
What you give it
- What the label says. Describe the symbols — shape, dot count, bars, crosses — or just copy the printed words if there are any.
- Fibre composition, if the tag is gone. The percentage breakdown is enough to build a full recommendation with no symbols at all.
- Garment type and construction. Knit or woven, lined or unlined, structured or not — it changes whether "dry clean only" is a real requirement.
- Colour, if it's new. Dark or bright dye needs a bleeding check on the first wash.
- Any embellishment. Sequins, beading, foil print or bonded seams override the fibre's default care entirely.
What comes back
- Exact wash settings. Temperature in both °C and °F, and the cycle name — not "delicate," the actual agitation level.
- Detergent and drying. What type of detergent to use, and whether it's tumble, flat, line or drip dry.
- Shrinkage and pilling as numbers. A percentage range for shrinkage, and where pilling is likely to show first.
- The overcaution note. Which part of the label is doing real work and which part is just a liability hedge.
Reach for it when
- A care label is all symbols and you cannot read one of them.
- The tag is missing or cut out, but you know or can guess the fabric.
- You want to know whether something will actually shrink or pill before you wash it, not after.
- The instructions look stricter than the fabric seems to need, and you want to know if that's real.
Do not reach for it when
- You want a weekly wash schedule built around your machine and drying setup — that's
laundry-schedule-builder, a different skill. - The garment is leather, suede or fur — those need specialist cleaning this skill will tell you to seek out, not attempt to schedule.
- You already know the care instructions and want help deciding what to wear. This skill has no opinion on that.
What you say
Navy cotton oxford shirt. Label shows a wash tub with two dots and one bar underneath, an empty triangle with a cross through it, a tumble-dry symbol (circle-in-square) with one dot, an iron with two dots, and no professional-cleaning circle symbol at all. Plain button-down, no lining, no embellishment, first wash.
What comes back
Wash. 40°C / 105°F on the permanent press cycle — that's the one bar under the tub, medium agitation rather than a full cotton cycle. Standard detergent is fine at this setting.
Dry. Tumble dry on low heat, one dot. Don't move it up to medium just because it's cotton — the label is capping heat for a reason covered below.
Iron. Medium heat, two dots, 150°C / 302°F maximum.
Dry clean. No professional-cleaning circle symbol at all — this is machine care only, no professional cleaning required or suggested.
Shrinkage. Around 1–3% if the shirt is sanforized, which most shirting is; 5–10% if it isn't — the label doesn't state the finish, so treat 1–3% as likely and 5–10% as the downside case. Oxford is a basketweave and sits looser than a poplin plain weave, so it won't resist relaxation shrinkage on its own — the finish decides this, not the weave. Most of it happens in the first two or three washes, driven by the dryer more than the wash.
Pilling. Low. Cotton pills readily, but the pills shed rather than persisting. The only spots worth watching are the collar and cuffs if they have a polyester reinforcement layer — polyester pills are the ones that stay.
The overcaution note — and why this one isn't overcautious. A pure cotton shirt can normally take a much hotter wash (up to 60°C) and a hotter iron (three dots, 200°C). This label caps both lower. That's not the label covering itself: the 40°C wash protects the navy dye from fading over repeated washes, and the medium iron heat avoids scorching any wrinkle-resistant finish on the collar and cuffs. Both restrictions are doing real work here — follow them as written.

# Fabric & Care Decoder
Turns a care label — read as symbols, as printed words, or as a fibre-content percentage with no
label at all — into concrete laundry instructions: temperature, cycle, detergent, drying, ironing,
and the shrinkage and pilling risk to actually expect. It also flags where the label is stricter
than the fibre requires.
## When to use this
- A care label uses symbols with no words and the user cannot read them.
- The tag is missing, cut out, or worn illegible, but the user knows or can guess the fibre content.
- Someone wants to know whether a garment is safe to machine wash, or whether it will shrink or pill.
- A new dark or bright garment needs a bleeding and colour-transfer check before its first wash.
- The label instructions look contradictory or oddly strict and the user wants to know which parts
actually matter.
**Not this skill:** building a weekly wash schedule around household size and drying capacity —
that is `laundry-schedule-builder`. This skill tells you the rules for one garment; that skill
tells you when to run the load.
## What to ask for
Required:
- **What the label says.** Either a description of the symbols (shape, dot count, bars, crosses),
the printed words, or, if there is no label, the fibre composition percentages and the garment
type.
- **Garment type and construction.** Knit or woven, lined or unlined, structured (blazer, coat) or
unstructured (t-shirt, blouse). Construction changes the dry-clean-only judgment call in step 6.
Helpful but optional, with the default assumed when missing:
- **Colour and whether it is new.** Default: assume a first wash if the user does not say
otherwise, and flag bleeding risk for anything dark, bright, or hand-dyed.
- **Embellishment** — sequins, beading, foil print, structured shoulder pads, bonded seams.
Default: assume none if not mentioned, but ask directly if the garment type suggests otherwise
(eveningwear, outerwear with a laminated shell).
- **Whether it has been washed before, and what happened.** Default: no prior history; treat as
first wash.
Do not ask for the brand, the price, or where it was bought — none of that changes the care rules.
## Procedure
1. **Determine the input type, and if symbols were given, work out which system they belong to
first.** Care symbols come from two different standards — ISO 3758 (GINETEX), used
internationally, and ASTM D5489, used in the US — and they are not always interchangeable (see
the glossary's system note and the "How to tell which system a label is using" section at the
top of `reference/care-symbol-glossary.md`). A wash tub with a printed number (30/40/50/60/70/95)
is ISO/GINETEX; a wash tub with only dots is ASTM. Use whichever cue is available — the tub
symbol, the garment's country of sale, English-only wording, Fahrenheit units — before reading
dot counts off the drying symbol, and say which system you assumed in the output if it was not
stated directly. Once the system is settled, work from `reference/care-symbol-glossary.md`. If
given only fibre composition and garment type with no label, skip to step 2 and build the
recommendation from fibre defaults, then label the whole output "no label — built from fibre
content" in the assumptions line.
2. **Set the wash temperature and cycle.** From the tub symbol's printed number or dot count, and
its bar count, or, with
no label, from the most heat-sensitive fibre in the blend (see the blend rule in the reference
file: care follows the most sensitive fibre, not the majority one). Wool, silk and anything with
elastane cap at 30°C on a delicate cycle regardless of what a majority-cotton or majority-
polyester blend partner would otherwise tolerate.
3. **Choose the detergent, and read the bleach triangle.** Standard detergent for cotton, linen,
and synthetics on a normal or permanent-press cycle. A wool- or silk-specific detergent (no
enzymes, no optical brighteners) for anything hand-wash or delicate-cycle: the proteases in an
ordinary biological detergent cannot distinguish stain protein from fibre protein, so they
degrade wool and silk over repeated washes and the damage is not repairable. No fabric softener
on technical or moisture-wicking synthetics — it deposits a residue that blocks the fibre's
wicking channels, and the effect accumulates. Then read the bleach triangle and report it:
empty means any bleach, two diagonal lines mean oxygen bleach only, a cross means none.
**On wool, silk, elastane and dyed synthetics, report "no chlorine bleach" even if the label
permits it** — hypochlorite attacks protein fibres and elastane directly.
4. **Set drying.** A circle-in-square is tumble dry — read its dot count for heat (see the system
note in step 1: three dots is an ASTM-only tier). A plain square with lines and no circle is
natural drying — line dry, flat dry, or drip dry, per the line pattern in the glossary — and a
crossed-out circle means air dry only, so move to the natural-drying square. On
fibre defaults with no label: air dry flat for wool, viscose/rayon, and anything loosely knitted
— wool and loose knits stretch under their own weight when hung wet, and viscose is at its
weakest wet and will stretch out of shape on a hanger even as a woven. Line or hang dry for
cotton and linen wovens. Low tumble for synthetics with elastane content over roughly 5 percent.
Medium tumble acceptable for plain cotton and polyester.
5. **Set ironing heat, or rule it out.** Read the iron symbol's dot count, or apply fibre defaults:
high heat for cotton and linen, medium for wool and polyester (press cloth for wool), low for
acetate, silk and elastane blends. Rule out ironing entirely for sequins, foil prints, PU or
rubberised coatings, and anything with a crossed-out iron symbol — use steam from a distance
instead if creases need addressing.
6. **Resolve dry-clean-only against the fibre.** A dry-clean-only label means one of two different
things and the procedure must say which: (a) the fibre or dye genuinely cannot survive water
(silk with unstable dye, wool with a structured shoulder, bonded or laminated seams), in which
case follow it; or (b) the garment is a simple unstructured knit or woven in a washable fibre and
the label is a liability disclaimer rather than a fibre requirement. Call case (b) explicitly in
step 8, and still give the label-following instruction as the safe default — do not tell the
user to ignore a dry-clean-only label outright, only to note that a cautious hand wash is a
plausible alternative if they choose to risk it.
7. **State shrinkage and pilling risk as a range tied to construction, never as a single number.**
Pull the dominant fibre's row from the reference table, pick the woven or knit column to match
the garment, and adjust for blend percentage. **Always give a range and name what would push the
garment to each end of it** — pre-shrunk or resin-finished sits at the bottom, raw or loom-state
at the top. If the user has not said whether the fabric is pre-shrunk, say so in `ASSUMPTIONS`
and quote the wider range rather than guessing a finish. If the garment has already been through
a hot wash or hot dryer cycle contrary to its label, say the shrinkage has likely already
happened rather than warning about a future risk.
8. **Write the overcaution note, and mark it as a judgement.** Compare the label's actual
restrictions against what the fibre and construction require. Where an instruction is stricter
than the fibre needs, name it and give the likely reason (a dye-stability hedge, a single label
printed for a whole product range, a liability hedge on a simple garment). **You cannot know the
manufacturer's reason, only infer it — word this as an inference, not as fact**, and keep the
label's instruction as the stated safe default in every case. If nothing on the label is
stricter than the fibre requires, say so directly. Do not manufacture a note to fill the
section.

rather than hedging: on a navy dyed garment the lower wash temperature slows dye loss, and moderate
iron heat avoids scorching a resin or wrinkle-resistant finish on the collar and cuffs. That is an
inference from the fibre, colour and construction, not something the label states. Nothing here
reads as overcautious.

- Whether the fabric is pre-shrunk was not given, so the shrinkage figure is quoted as both cases.
- All other inputs were given directly from the label.

## Edge cases and failure modes
- **No label and the user does not know the fibre content.** Ask once for the fabric's feel and
behaviour (matte and cool to the touch usually cotton or linen; slightly shiny and slippery
usually a synthetic or viscose; springs back when scrunched usually has elastane). Build a
provisional recommendation from the most conservative match and label it clearly as a guess in
`ASSUMPTIONS`.
- **Contradictory symbols**, such as a 40°C wash tub paired with a hand-wash-only icon on the same
label. Resolve toward the more restrictive instruction — hand wash at or below 40°C — and note
the contradiction rather than silently picking one.
- **Leather, suede, fur, or fur-trim.** These are not covered by the fibre table at all. State
plainly that they need specialist leather or fur cleaning, not home laundering of any kind, and
stop there rather than guessing a wash temperature.
- **Sequins, beading, foil print, or bonded/laminated seams.** Override any wash-tub symbol present:
hand wash cold at most, no tumble dry, no direct iron contact, regardless of what the fibre
content alone would otherwise allow.
- **A garment that has already been washed wrong** (shrunk, pilled, felted). Do not offer a fix that
does not exist — wool felting and heat-set acrylic shine are permanent. Say so, and give the
correct instructions for next time instead of a false remedy.
- **A request to decide whether the garment is worth keeping after damage**, or which of several
damaged garments to prioritise replacing. Hand off to `wishlist-triage` for a buy decision or
`closet-declutter-protocol` for a keep/repair/sell/bin call — this skill only reports the care
facts.
- **A request to fix how the garment fits after shrinkage**, or whether an alteration can reverse
it. Hand off to `tailor-brief` — shrinkage recovery and re-tailoring are a different job.
## Reference files

## What this skill does not do
This skill handles wardrobe logistics, not visual styling. It will not:
- Tell you what to wear or whether a garment suits an occasion once it is clean.
- Judge how a garment fits, drapes, or suits the person wearing it.
- Decide whether a damaged or shrunk garment is worth keeping — that is a declutter or purchase
decision, not a care question.
